My Hawaii Banyan Tree Experience – Local Weed or Major Bust?

From California to Maui – Have Weed and Travel

When travelling on vacation without any weed from the San Francisco Bay Area California to Maui, Hawaii, one’s mind is eased because you know there could be a chance of scoring a bag in the old downtown whaling port of Lahaina; and many folks can attest to this experience. As this became common knowledge people purchased an amount of marijuana for a reasonable charge under The Banyan Tree.

Where is the famous Hawaiian Banyan Tree Located?

In Lahaina, at the end of Front Street, is an incredible 60 foot high tree (one of the worlds’ largest trees in the United States) and known simply as The Banyan Tree. This tree was planted in 1873 and now sits ironically right in front of Courthouse Square. People have frequented The Banyan Tree for at least 50 years to get local weed. If you projected the right vibe and stood at the base of the tree sooner or later somebody sauntered up and mumbled “buds” and within five minutes a quick deal and score!

Ah, those were the days. Things have changed. Today you are more likely to get rip-off artists selling “Kook,” which is similar to real bud albeit no high. Drug dealers use this to take advantage of tourists on vacation. In other words the individuals selling “Kook” have found another way to rip-off the tourists. Smells like bud, looks like bud – but is in fact fake weed and is legal.

Can you get local weed by sitting underneath the Banyan Tree?

The tree continues to grow and the pot spot that was the meeting place for years has now turned into a place to stay away from if looking for green. Though The Banyan Tree is a must see as the tree itself is awe inspiring.

While on a recent vacation to Maui we met a Local who had an extreme amount of local knowledge about the marijuana culture. He told us all about Kook and even gave us some edibles….mind blowing! He also told us there is no “Maui Wowie.” Maui Wowie simply describes the high but is not in fact a type or name of weed.

Of course, ideally you would love to travel with a bag but on board a plane but for obvious reasons you cannot. Now, some folks are able to actually bring marijuana on the airplane (more local knowledge).

Can you fly with marijuana in California?

Fortunately for some of us Californians, there are two airports that have become more “user friendly.” One can now fly out of Oakland and/or San Jose airports with the stash but checking in is an absolute must with TSA (“Transportation Security Administration”). You can request a waiver from this point.

But sometimes security will confiscate, but other times they allow you to pass through. Doesn’t hurt to try if you just can’t leave home without it!

Did you have better luck under the Lahaina Banyan Tree? Share your stories in the comments section below.

Very interesting to learn the hidden history of this tree! Too bad the market under its branches has changed, would have been nice to visit in the good old days

Great Article Victoria! Thanks for spotlighting the “kook” dealers under the Banyan Tree! “KOOKS” is not Legal at all. It looks like “herb” but has no smell! Best advice is not to buy anything from under the Banyan Tree! If you do your contributing to a TWEAKERS lifestyle!
